Buckwalter Skatepark: Bluffton, SC
The Prime Architect for this project was Clancy Wells Architects. Clancy Wells contacted the Pillar Design Studios/Artisan Skateparks team to handle all aspects of the Skatepark Design, Construction Documentation to Construction. After reviewing the Geo‐Technical report, we were aware that there were water‐table issues at the selected site. This was not problematic for us but instead a welcoming challenge to create a great design that would fit appropriately into the site. Due to this our designer created an entirely above ground Skatepark, circumventing any high water‐table issues.
This park has something for everyone. Designed to draw and engage all levels of users while also offering a gathering place for local community members. The Skatepark flows easily into different sections, providing all types of terrain and ability, from beginner, intermediate to advance. There is also a separate bowl to promote safety and offer different skate‐able lines. To help encourage community gatherings, other features were added such as a crescent shaped shade pavilion structure with sloped roof, benches and a drinking fountain. The total budget for the entire project was $500,000.00; this included the Skatepark, Storm-water management, shade pavilion, sidewalks, benches and drinking fountain.
